The other days, my roommate suggested to pull out
the plug of microwave oven, when it is not in use, since the strong microwave
and radiation could be really harmful. I believe it a smart decision, since large
amount of energy and electricity could be saved at the same time. Usually, the
standby power is estimated to account for some 9% of home’s electricity use.
Typically, in Australian’s home, the biggest
guzzler of energy at around 40% is caused by cooling and heating the home. One
of the best ways to reduce this energy use is through passive design ideas. For
example, insulating the walls and ceilings can significantly restrict heat
transfer. It could keep indoor space cool in summer and warm in winter.
Moreover, 15%-25% of winter heat loss in buildings is caused by leaked heat,
which may contribute much to energy bills. However, closing windows and doors,
or using runners to eliminate draughts under doors could simply solve this problem.
Passive solar house
Blind and curtain
Sunlight may also be a key element in passive
design. Moderating temperature by allowing sunlight to warm your house, and
utilizing blind or curtain to keep the houses shaded in hot summer, could all
help to save energy.
Except passive design, many simple actions could
make much noticeable saving at home:
-Citizen should monitor their thermostat to ensure
hot water is at the right temperature and no need of adjusting the temperature
is required.
-When it is possible, using manual tools in place
of electrical device.
-When cooling and heating the house, make sure that
doors and windows are closed, and try to limit the cooling and heating in the
room you are using, instead of the whole house.
